TSN today announced that its flagship news and information program, SportsCentre would be broadcast in high definition beginning Sept. 5, 2006. With the addition of SportsCentre in HD, TSN now projects that by September 2006; nearly 50 per cent of its TSN HD broadcast schedule will be presented in High Definition.
Last week, Digital Home reported on a recent survey by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) which showed sports enthusiasts are driving the sales of new high-definition television. The studay found that nearly 50 percent of HDTV owners cited HD sports programming as the primary reason behind their HDTV purchase. Apparently sports broadcasters such as TSN also believe that HD can be a moneymaker by increasing the number of upscale viewers with expensive HD televisions.
Currently TSN has selected programming in most major sports in HD and their stated goal is to produce more hours of HD sports coverage than any other Canadian broadcaster.
Between now and September 5th, SportsCentre will transition its newsroom operations to employ HD equipment which will include upgrades to its studio and control room. The network promises that all studio cameras will shoot in HD and an HD server will record and edit available HD events for highlights from around North America. SportsCentre will also deploy its first HD cameras in the field to shoot features and reports.
With SportsCentre's Evening, Late, Overnight and Morning loop broadcasts, TSN HD viewers will be guaranteed at least nine hours of SportsCentre HD coverage each weekday, with an additional 15 hours on weekends.
To receive SportsCentre in HD, you will need an HDTV television, an HD subscription from your cable or satellite company and an HDTV tuner. For more information, read What do I need to watch High Definition programming?
