Yahoo! Canada introduces new version of mail E-mail
Tuesday, 21 March 2006

Yahoo! Mail BetaYahoo! Canada today announced a new beta version of its browser based email reader.

The new mail interface provides enhanced functionality, such as drag and drop e-mail organization, tabbed email messaging, message preview panes and an integrated RSS reader.

Many users who first look at the new interface (see below) will remark on how the new interface looks and acts like robust email clients such as Outlook or Outlook Express.

Like the current Yahoo! Mail reader, the new beta is browser-based and does not have the need for a software download.

The beta, which is available on Firefox (Mac/Windows) and Internet Explorer (Windows only), incorporates Oddpost technology, the company which Yahoo! bought in 2004, and provides the most significant enhancement to the Yahoo! Mail interface since its launch in 1997.

New Yahoo! Mail Beta Interface

Digital Home tried out the new beta email and came away very impressed. Yahoo! users wanting Outlook style functionality combined with the ability to view email from almost pc connected to the Internet should try this out.

The only downside we found was that it is advertising supported so you will have to view ads while checking your email.Current Yahoo! mail users shouldn't have a problem with the ads but for those of you who use an email client, you may find it annoying.

In order to encourage current users to try the new interface, Yahoo! says that beta mail users will also be able to toggle back to the current version of Yahoo! Mail.

The beta also recently became available in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France and Korea, and will be rolled-out to all Yahoo! Mail users in Canada and those markets in the coming weeks. Yahoo! intends to make the new version available to all users worldwide after the completion of beta testing.

Highlights of the beta version of Yahoo! Mail include increased speed and features such as:

  • Fast and easy-to-use interface that functions like a desktop client application
  • Drag-and-drop message organization
  • Reading panes to instantly view messages
  • Comprehensive and speedy search of e-mail headers, bodies, and attachments
  • Ability to view multiple e-mails at the same time, using tabbed navigation
  • Integrated RSS reader
  • Automatic check and delivery of new mail
  • Keyboard shortcuts and right click menus
  • Ability to scroll through all message headers in a folder, rather than page by page
  • Address autocomplete
  • Spam and virus protection
  • Available on Firefox (Mac/Windows) and Internet Explorer (Windows only)
