In its seventh Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report, the CRTC reported there were at least 321,393 subscribers to discretionary HD services in Canada as of the Spring of 2006. With over 11.5 million households in Canada, the percentage of households that currently subscribe to HD services is probably still less than 3%.
The actual subscribers numbers are slightly higher since the data source only includes cable and satellite television companies with 20,000 or more subscribers but the exact number is unknown. Cable systems with less than 20,000 subscribers are not required to report such information, however, the number of HD subscribers among these operators is considered to be very small.
Among the big six cable and satellite providers, by far and away the biggest providers of HD services were ExpressVu and Rogers which offer 27 and 26 stations respectively. The third largest provider of HD services was Cogeco (19) followed by Star Choice (14), Vidéotron (13) and Shaw (10).
As of May 1st 2006, the CRTC had approved four analog specialty, two pay and ten category 2 specialty services for distribution in the HD format.
