Page 1 of 4 The Internet has revolutionalized the way Canadians conduct their lives and the next killer application in the internet revolution is Digital Telephony. These new Internet protocol (IP) based services are bringing consumers more choice and more options in telephone service. Digital Home Canada spent five months using one such service from Primus Canada and has this report.
Background According to the company’s website, Primus Canada is the largest alternative provider of consumer long distance services in Canada with over 700,000 retail customers. In addition, the company operates as an Internet service provider with over 80,000 subscribers. Primus Canada has offices across the country, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the U.S. based Primus Telecommunications Group which was founded in 1997 and was the first company in Canada to offer broadband telephone service (also known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or Digital telephony) in the second week of January 2004. TalkBroadband Offerings The Primus TalkBroadband service, which is best characterized as a nomadic VoIP service, offers three residential plans ranging from $15.95 to $29.95 per month. (To learn more about VoIP and Digital Telephony, check out Digital Home Canada’s Digital Telephony Primer ) Digital Home Canada signed up for the Unlimited Bundle which is priced at $29.95 per month. For customers who purchase the Primus VoIP gateway for $99, the monthly cost of the Unlimited Bundle falls to $25.95 per month. Unlike other services, Primus does not have any additional activation or cancellation fees and you are NOT required to sign up to any contract. So what do you get for $29.95? The answer is quite a lot. All three TalkBroadband plans include free local calling, 911 Emergency Service, the ability to choose your area code, free in network calling, local number portability and online account management. Included in the unlimited plan is unlimited long distance calling in Canada and the continental U.S.A along with the following calling features: voicemail, call forwarding, call transfer, call waiting, caller ID, caller ID block, 5 way conference calling, Do Not Disturb, speed dialing and access to the online TalkBroadband portal. Please note that in order to use the TalkBroadband Service; you must have an existing high-speed DSL or Cable internet connection. The TalkBroadband service cannot be used with a dial-up internet connection and it is not recommended that you use the service with a high speed “lite” internet connection. Next: TalkBroadband Review
